Mosaic Monday: Fall Afghan Inspiration

Fall is definitely here and the weather in the Midwest has started to get pretty chilly at night.  It's time to pull out your favorite afghan or start working on a new one.  Today's Mosaic Monday is a little fall afghan inspiration from my Grandma Harvey's collection that I mentioned last week here.  I love the warm colors and neat textures.  Enjoy!

Mosaic Monday: Thrifted Granny

My Grandma Harvey has an amazing afghan collection.  She has been collecting afghans mostly from thrift stores for decades.  The last time I visited I made sure that I snapped a few pictures of these yarn beauties.

Today's mosaic is of a thrifted granny square afghan that has every color in the rainbow represented.  the granny square is such a versatile pattern.  It's a great way to use up yarn leftovers to make something both functional and beautiful for your home.

I have to be honest here and say that I have never actually attempted to make a granny square.  For an active crocheter that's pretty embarrassing I will admit.  I do have it on my list of patterns to work on in the future though.  I have been saving up those left over yarn balls that come after so many finished projects.  I know there is a granny square in my future.

The Simple Woman's Daybook - Friday, September 13, 2013

Outside my window...Things are green outside from the little bit of rain we received earlier in the week.  It's been pretty warm here which makes me wish for fall just a little.  I do realize that when fall and winter are in full swing I will probably be missing summer.  I will enjoy these warm temperatures while I can.

I am thinking...about the lovely conversations that I had in Target today of all places.  I went in to get my glasses adjusted and while I waited a nice gentleman and I made small talk about glasses and it grew from there.  It was surprising to me how easy it was to spark a quality conversation.  I later spoke with two different Target staff members that were genuinely nice and interesting.

I am thankful for...Friday night dinner and a movie time with my kids.  I couldn't get enough of the good food and cuddles.

I am wearing...A black cotton 1950's inspired dress with a raspberry tank peaking through.  It's time to do laundry around here so I thank God that this was clean.

I am remembering...old friends and good times.

Creating a Better Morning Routine

It all started Sunday night as my kids and I were getting everything ready for the start of another week of school.  We couldn't have another week like we had this past week.  Not getting up on time, fighting over what to wear, running out the door getting only a granola bar for breakfast and constant bickering about why our morning routine needed an overhaul.

So I decided to try something new this week with my Daughter and our morning routine.  A few days later I read this post on the Art of Non-Conformity blog where Chris Guillebeau writes about saving your every day choices for the big ideas so you can improve your focus.  Creating a routine for yourself where all the basic choices have been made already.  You know what you are going to have for breakfast and your clothes are all ready laid out the night before, etc.  Save your personal energy for the larger decisions in life.  The decisions that can make the most impact.  I had a feeling that I was on the right track.

We had already been making strides with getting to bed earlier and are closer to my goal bed time of lights out at 8:30 PM.  We are still a little sleepy getting up in the morning but I have seen real improvement.  My daughter has finally got the idea that getting more sleep equals feeling more rested and that has helped tremendously.  Night time is also when I read aloud from whatever chapter book we are currently working on.  We get in two chapters usually if we get in bed on time.

To cut down on the bickering and the fighting in the morning I realized we had to trim down our morning routine and make it simpler.  I walked through the morning in my mind and listed all the things that we need to do before we headed out for school.  If we planned ahead each of the things listed could go a lot smoother and make our mornings so much more pleasant.

  • Wake -up
  • Get Dressed
  • Eat Breakfast
  • Brush Teeth
  • Pack Lunch
  • Get Back Pack
  • Walk to School

Tasty Tuesday: Great Aunt Susie's and Grandma's Pea Salad

The Happy Couple!
This past June was a busy month as we celebrated the marriage of my sister Sarah Parker and her partner Molly.  We started out the festivities with a combined wedding shower and engagement party for all of our family that lived in Kansas.  For some people it was the first time they were to meet Molly since the couple resides in Iowa.

I took on the task of putting together a party that would reflect the couple's style and give them ample time to connect with family and friends.  We wanted something casual and we knew that we would serve dinner.  Our friend Terry and my Dad graciously opened up their home for the evening and let me take over their kitchen.  I designed the invitations and with Sarah Parker's help put together the guest list.

Decorations were kept simple.  I chose to use yellow because it was the accent color for their wedding and orange because it compliments so well and it is one of my favorites.  I took a trip to my local thrift store and found mason jars, orange and yellow serving items, a couple baskets, raffia and a white table cloth.  I went to a craft store and found bandannas for .99 and bought several to use as table decorations.  I went to my local grocery store the day of the party and picked up yellow, red and orange gerber daisies for flowers.  I also shopped my house for items that would work in our color scheme.

Mosaic Monday: Back to School

We have survived the first full week of school in the Elliott house.  My daughter is starting to enjoy being a second grader and I am getting back into the routine of backpack checks, homework and making lunches.  I have attended my first PTO meeting and had a meeting with the principal (Not what you think.  They wanted a parents perspective on the school).  I am looking forward to another exciting year!

The Simple Woman's Daybook - Friday, August 23, 2013

Outside my window...it  was a sunny day in Lawrence, KS.  We are wrapping up summer with warmer temperatures.  There's still time to hit the swimming pool before it gets cold again.

I am thinking...about all the things I haven't checked off my to-do list due to a yucky upper respiratory virus I got a couple weeks ago.  I have been to the doctor twice and I'm taking an antibiotic finally.  I've tried a cough suppressant and that doesn't seem to be helping that much.  I also have tried Zyrtec to rule out allergies and that just knocked me out the next day and made me feel like a zombie.  I am hopeful about the antibiotic.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

I am thankful for...my Mom.  Even though we get on each other's nerves and know just how to push each other's buttons she is my biggest supporter.  I love you Mom!

I am wearing...A cute knit dress in gray, navy, yellow and orange color blocking.  It is so comfortable.  I just throw on a pair of sandals and a couple jewelry accessories and I am good to go.

I am remembering...my years in elementary school.  My daughter started second grade this month.  I was reminded of my second grade teacher.  She shared a little bit about herself that first week on an About Me board that we all got to do sometime before the year ended.  She had a black belt in karate, a dog or cat named taco and loved to read books.  I also remember her special chalk holder that she used when writing on the black board.  We read "The Velveteen Rabbit" that year and counted to 100 on paper.

I am currently reading...I have done a ton of reading this summer both personally and with my kids.  Both kids and I finished the Lawrence Public Library's reading program in July with one more month to go in the summer.  I usually have a few books going at once.  Here's what I am currently reading:

For the past couple years I have signed up for the Reading Challenge that goodreads offer.  I decided to double my reading goal this year so I could also start tracking the many children's books that I have been reading with my kids.  We read a minimum of two chapters a night together right before bed and I thought I should be getting credit for that, too.  Here's my progress:

Stay on Track for Back to School

My school shopping is done and out of the way for both my kids as of last Wednesday. I have updated my Google calendar with all the school dates for 2013 – 2014, scheduled yearly physicals for this week and hit a major deal with 50% off children's clothing at my local thrift store to round out our fall and winter wardrobe. I know, you're probably wondering how I accomplish such a feat. My focus on these goals really paid off and has lessened my stress level where back to school is concerned. I am going to share a few things that made this year a little easier and kept me on track.

Get your school supply list as soon as possible. Check out your local school districts website and see if they have already posted supply lists. While you are there download the school calendar and any forms you may need for enrollment. If those things aren't available call the district office and request them. I have heard that some districts don't give out supply lists until school has already begun. Luckily that is not the case here.

Check your stash and round up school supplies you already have around the house and see if you can check a few things off your list. I was able to check off a fourth of the list with all the new supplies I had bought last year when they went on sale. I found a small basket and rounded them up. Check your kids closets for fall and winter clothes and see how well you are stocked for the coming season. I keep clothing one to two sizes up for each of my kids in a couple bins in their closet. If I find a great deal somewhere that I can't pass up I put those items away for the next season. That way I don't have to rush around each time it gets colder trying to find jackets and warmer clothes.

Mosaic Monday: Bookworms & Water Bugs

Our public library is pretty amazing.  We are lucky in Lawrence, KS to have such a committed organization for multi-generational enrichment and I can't wait until our new facility is completed in 2014.  A couple weeks ago I took my two kiddos to a summer program sponsored by our library called Bookworms and Water Bugs.

Bookworms
We all started out at Watson Park near the Lawrence Aquatic Center for story time and a little singing.

Water Bugs
Then we all headed to the pool for a free swim.

These photos were taken with my digital camera.  I used Picassa to do a little editing and collage creation.

Mosaic Monday: Roads and Fields of Iowa

I visited my sister and her partner for the second time this summer and took these pictures of Iowa on the way home while riding shot gun in the car.  Last time I went through I was asleep and didn't get to see the wind turbines in all their glory.  This time I tried my hand at taking pictures in a moving vehicle.  I was surprised that quite a few turned out as nicely as they did.

I hope you are getting to spend some quality time with your friends and family, enjoying some tasty food while you sit back in amazement at your local fireworks display.

Creative Spending & Saving

Money is tight pretty much everywhere these days and it doesn't look like it's going to get any easier any time soon. We are being forced to be even more resourceful than ever before.
Over the past year or so I have been looking for ways to cut the fat in my spending and make do with less. For me there isn't a lot of money to spend so, most of my ideas are about making do with less and being even smarter about what you do spend your hard earned money on.
Saving money and spending less means getting back to basics and making things simpler. The last time we had to do that as a nation was during the Great Depression. There is a greater interest during these recession times in the tools and tricks people used back then to make ends meet and get by.

Here are some of the tips and tricks that I have used in my family to creatively cut our spending and save. Enjoy!
  • Prioritize your Spending
  • Thrift store clothing shopping [frugal fashionista]
  • Shop the Library
  • homemade cleaners [renest cleaners]
  • Get out the crockpot and learn how to use it [crockpot 365]
  • Re-use and Re-purpose
  • Stack those coupons [Money Saving Mom]
  • Weekly Menu Planning
  • Make it yourself
  • Survey Says... [e-rewards]
  • Take the Bus or Walk
  • Free Community Activities

How are you getting creative with your spending and saving?

Dinner and a Book Store Family Date Night

Dinner and a book store is one of our family's favorite outings and it's a great family date night for all ages. For our last family date night we decided to try a new restaurant for us, Pei Wei Asian Diner.  They are owned by the people who created P. F. Chang's Chinese Biestro.  Since P. F. Chang's is one of my favorite restaurants I couldn't wait to give Pei Wei Asian Diner a try.

We enjoyed vegetable spring rolls, tofu singapore noodles, shrimp low mein and honey chicken.

Our food was brought to us after we placed our order up front and found a table.  The kitchen is open so you can watch your food being prepared.  Madi enjoyed the chopstick helpers that were provided with her kids meal and both kids loved the orange slices available near the drinks.  You do have to get your own refills but that wasn't too bad.

At the end of our meal we ate our fortune cookies, and took a picture to remember our fortunes.  Then, off to the book store!

Barnes & Noble has a lot of options for entertainment for young families.  We of course visited the children's section and played with the train sets and the story book stage.  And you can't forget the escalator.  That was a favorite of our son, Oli.

Madi had me reading princess themed books and a new one to us, "Purpliscious".

When we had all the fun we could handle and it started getting late we drove home to get ready for bed.  Thinking about our special date night reminds me that it's time to have another one.  What are some of your favorite family date night activities?

Dreaming at Nebraska Furniture Mart

I have only been to Nebraska Furniture Mart a few times but each time I get lost in all the choices and start dreaming about future purchases.  This last trip was no exception.  I spent quite a bit of time upstairs in the dining room sets.

I have always wanted a hutch to display my favorite dishes but I am not quite sure what style my husband and I would be happy with.  I lean towards more modern styles and Asian inspired designs.  I am a little overwhelmed by the choice due to the fact that I think of buying any large furniture piece as a major investment that I have to live with for a long time.

I guess I'll keep dreaming...

Tasty Tuesday: Elliott Birthday Cake

Several years ago I created this cake experiment using pound cake, berries and whipped cream layered together.  My husband was convinced that this should be his only birthday cake from then on and the Elliott Birthday Cake was born.

Some years I make the whole thing from scratch and other years I get a little help from the store.  It just depends on how much time I have towards the end of May when my husband celebrates his birthday.

This year I realized that I hadn't written down my recipe for future generations and that just wouldn't do.  So, without further adieu here's the Elliott Birthday Cake aka Citrus Pound Cake Triffle with Mixed Berry Compote.  Enjoy!

Citrus Pound Cake Triffle with Mixed Berry Compote

Citrus Pound Cake
2c flour
1t baking powder
1/2t salt
1c sugar
1T orange zest
1t lemon zest
2 sticks of butter
4 eggs
2T orange juice
1T lemon juice
1t vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 325°F.

Butter a standard sized loaf pan.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside.  Mix together the sugar and citrus fruit zests with a whisk or electric mixer if you have one at low speed until sugar is evenly colored, then add butter and whisk together or beat at high speed until pale and fluffy, about 5 minutes.  Beat in your eggs one at a time and then add in the citrus juices and vanilla.  Slowly mix in the flour mixture until it just comes together.

Spread the batter in your buttered loaf pan and tap pan several times on counter to get rid of any air bubbles.
Bake until golden and a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Cool in pan on a rack 30 minutes, then run a knife around edge of pan and invert cake onto rack. Cool completely, top side up.

This cake can be made up to five days ahead and gets better with age.  Just keep it wrapped tightly, at room temperature.

Berry Compote
3 12-16 oz bags of frozen berries
orange zest and juice
lemon zest and juice

Put all of your frozen berries, orange zest, lemon zest and juice from both citrus fruits into a sauce pan and simmer on low until fruit breaks down and a light syrup forms.  It takes about 30 minutes or so.

(I used one bag of mixed berries, one bag of strawberries, and one bag of raspberries.)

Cake Construction

Now we get to the fun of putting this all together.  Here's what you will need:

Completed and Cooled Citrus Pound Cake
Cooled Berry Compote
One Double Tall Container of Whipped Cream
Your Favorite Triffle Bowl (I have still to get one of those) or Clear Glass Serving Container

First you want to slice your pound cake into 1/2 inch slices and line the bottom of your chosen container.  There will be gaps and that's okay.  Next spoon a little bit of the berry compote on top of the pound cake until lightly covered.

Finally, cover the berries with whipped cream to cover.  That is your first layer.  Complete this process until you run out of cake or run out of room in your serving container.  Which ever one happens first.
Serve your creation in your favorite dessert dish or bowl.  Martini glasses work well if you are feeling creative.  Keep leftovers if you have them in your refrigerator.

Mosaic Monday: Oli is Two!

We kept things pretty simple for my son's second birthday.  We had a small family party and enjoyed watching Oli open his many presents.

I had a whole package of ice cream cones that I had no idea what to do with so I thought I would give cupcake cones a whirl and they turned out lovely thanks to my Mom's expert assistance.

As a parent I have noticed that time truly flies and it's important to take the time to enjoy your kids.  I look forward to all that Oli's third year has in store for us.
