Mosaic Monday: Favorite Target Holiday Design Collections

I just love window shopping the different holiday collections that show up in my local target.  They are full of neat design ideas and color combinations.  Here are a few of my favorites.  Enjoy!

The Creation of a Blue Fairy

My daughter, Madi saw this blue fairy costume idea from our favorite thrift store and decided then and there that this was the costume for her this Halloween. I was a little bit nervous because I wasn't sure how we would recreate it on our limited budget. In the following weeks I worked to convince her that taking elements of that costume and making it our own would be just as effective and cool. It also could be a lot of fun.

We discussed what elements were must-haves for this costume and we decided on:

An all Blue Outfit

Blue Hair (either a wig or temporary dye)

Sparkles

Fairy Skirt (like a tutu)

One of the things I have tried to do in the past is create a base for an outfit that can be used as regular clothes later on. With the Blue Fairy a long sleeved blue t-shirt we found at the local thrift store and dark blue denim leggings that we had on hand were the perfect canvas. We also added dark shoes and socks from Madi's closet to finish it off.
The Basic Outfit
Then we hit the Dollar Tree to get some inspiration. We hit the jackpot and found blue fairy wings, silver and blue sparkle jewelry that lights up, a blue headband hair extension, and a blue canvas treat bag. I even found a few princess/fairy skirts that matched but decided to make our skirt. I had always wanted to try my hand at making a no sew fairy tutu skirt and now was the time.

Our last trip was to the fabric store to get skirt making supplies. Here's what you need to make your very own fairy skirt:

2 yards of 1 ½” - 2” wide light blue fabric ribbon [I went ahead and just bought the whole roll]

2 yards each of 4 different shades of blue tulle fabric
I measured my ribbon to fit my daughter's waist and then added a couple feet on either side so I could have a generous bow on the back when the finished skirt was tied on. Then I laid that aside so I could tackle all that tulle.
I cut the tulle into ~4 inch wide strips that were ~3 feet long. I eyeballed this one. You might want your skirt shorter or longer depending on who you are making it for. These dimensions gave a nice result for my five year old.
Then I laid out the ribbon I had cut and found the center point. I anchored the ends of my ribbon down with several heavy books and my five year old skirt making assistant. I decided on a random color pattern and set to work tying each piece of tulle to the ribbon so that it hang evenly on both sides. You don't want to tie too tightly because you want a little bit of wiggle room to even out the fabric later on. I continued to work from the center out, alternating each side until I was out of tulle.
Blue Fairy with Super Why
I finished the skirt by tying it onto my trusty five year old assistant and adjusting the tulle so that there was even coverage all around. And that is pretty much it. Every so often the skirt needs a little fluffing and straightening but otherwise it wears really well and is quite simple to make. I finished the entire project start to finish in about 30 minutes.

Here's the entire Blue Fairy Finished Product!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ode to Candy Corn

Oh, how I love candy corn!
It brings a smile to my face.
Each Fall it arrives and has a special place.
Oh, how I love candy corn!

I have eaten my fair share of candy corn already this fall season. I snatched up my first bag right when they went on the shelf at my local grocery store. It just doesn't quite feel like fall without a little candy corn. So, in honor of my favorite fall candy I would like to share this round-up of candy corn themed pictures and ideas that I have collected. Enjoy!

Tasty Tuesday: Elliott Birthday Cake

Several years ago I created this cake experiment using pound cake, berries and whipped cream layered together.  My husband was convinced that this should be his only birthday cake from then on and the Elliott Birthday Cake was born.

Some years I make the whole thing from scratch and other years I get a little help from the store.  It just depends on how much time I have towards the end of May when my husband celebrates his birthday.

This year I realized that I hadn't written down my recipe for future generations and that just wouldn't do.  So, without further adieu here's the Elliott Birthday Cake aka Citrus Pound Cake Triffle with Mixed Berry Compote.  Enjoy!

Citrus Pound Cake Triffle with Mixed Berry Compote

Citrus Pound Cake
2c flour
1t baking powder
1/2t salt
1c sugar
1T orange zest
1t lemon zest
2 sticks of butter
4 eggs
2T orange juice
1T lemon juice
1t vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 325°F.

Butter a standard sized loaf pan.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside.  Mix together the sugar and citrus fruit zests with a whisk or electric mixer if you have one at low speed until sugar is evenly colored, then add butter and whisk together or beat at high speed until pale and fluffy, about 5 minutes.  Beat in your eggs one at a time and then add in the citrus juices and vanilla.  Slowly mix in the flour mixture until it just comes together.

Spread the batter in your buttered loaf pan and tap pan several times on counter to get rid of any air bubbles.
Bake until golden and a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Cool in pan on a rack 30 minutes, then run a knife around edge of pan and invert cake onto rack. Cool completely, top side up.

This cake can be made up to five days ahead and gets better with age.  Just keep it wrapped tightly, at room temperature.

Berry Compote
3 12-16 oz bags of frozen berries
orange zest and juice
lemon zest and juice

Put all of your frozen berries, orange zest, lemon zest and juice from both citrus fruits into a sauce pan and simmer on low until fruit breaks down and a light syrup forms.  It takes about 30 minutes or so.

(I used one bag of mixed berries, one bag of strawberries, and one bag of raspberries.)

Cake Construction

Now we get to the fun of putting this all together.  Here's what you will need:

Completed and Cooled Citrus Pound Cake
Cooled Berry Compote
One Double Tall Container of Whipped Cream
Your Favorite Triffle Bowl (I have still to get one of those) or Clear Glass Serving Container

First you want to slice your pound cake into 1/2 inch slices and line the bottom of your chosen container.  There will be gaps and that's okay.  Next spoon a little bit of the berry compote on top of the pound cake until lightly covered.

Finally, cover the berries with whipped cream to cover.  That is your first layer.  Complete this process until you run out of cake or run out of room in your serving container.  Which ever one happens first.
Serve your creation in your favorite dessert dish or bowl.  Martini glasses work well if you are feeling creative.  Keep leftovers if you have them in your refrigerator.

Your Own Lenten Grotto

Emily & Madi with a friend
I put it on my to-do list last year to make my very own Lenten grotto after I saw the project here on "A Holy Experience."  I loved the simplicity and the symbolism that could help better explain the Lenten & Easter season to my children.  I also love any excuse to bring a succulent plant into the house.

We lucked out when gathering supplies because we had everything we needed in the house already.  We got creative with plants and found rock leftover from another potted plant.  Moss was outside and the rocks that we used to make the tomb were in the backyard.

Here's what you will need to make your very own Lenten Grotto Garden:

  • A container that has a lot of surface area like a planter basket or plastic bowl planter
  • Three or four small plants.  We used a spider plant and a few succulents.  (You can get yours at a garden center or take cuttings from plants you have on hand like we did.)
  • A small branch
  • Moss
  • Small glass for the reflecting pool
  • A few shells or rocks to scatter around and to make a path to the tomb
  • A large rock or rocks to make a cave-like tomb
  • Soil & water

Reflecting Pool

Plant your garden and fill your pool with a little rock and water.  Lay stones to make a path in expectation of what is to come.

Do I Smell Birthday Cake?

Today I turn 29 years old.  At our house we call that being version 2.9.  You can tell we get a little bit nerdy every once in awhile.  So, I thought I would share this little video with you so we can kick off the celebration together.  I love Nirvana and I think this rewrite by Tim Hawkins is brilliant.  Enjoy!

Are We Equal? Support International Women's Day 2011

I found this video in my inbox this morning from my mother.  She is quite the fan of Daniel Craig who stars in this short video that was specifically commissioned for International Women's Day.  Craig is given a dramatic makeover to put himself literally in a woman's shoes.  It also features the voice of Dame Judi Dench in her role as 'M'.  This film works to highlight the inequalities that still persist between men and women and will be screened in movie theaters worldwide.  I think it's a neat fact that this is the first film featuring the character James Bond that was directed by a woman.

(I have been struggling to get this video embedded and can't figure out why it's not working.  How frustrating!  So, until this is fixed here is the link that will take you directly to YouTube so you can watch this fantastic video.)
